tuballigation reversal explained with pictures.

Tuballigation reversal.

Tuballigation (tubal ligation) is an operation that blocks the tubes carrying a woman's egg to her uterus.

Tuballigation is the number one method of birth control used by women over the age of 30 in the United States. Although it is usually considered to be permanent, in reality it can be reversed . Tuballigation reversal is successfully in most cases.

Tuballigation and resection

The surgeon can tie and cut, or place rings or clips, or burn the tubes to block them from allowing the sperm and egg to meet.

Ligation means to apply a ligature or tie, and tuballigation is often called "tying" the tubes. Many people picture tying a fallopian tube like tying a shoe lace or a bow.

To explain how this is actually done, we illustrate the most common tuballigation procedures.

Pomeroy Technique - Tuballigation and resection (removal) of a portion of the fallopian tube is the most frequent method of blocking the tubes. This involves tying a segment of tube and removing it.

Tubal Rings and Clips - The Falope ring, Yoon ring, or Lay loop, and the spring clip or Hulka Clip cause mechanical obstruction of the fallopian tube.

Monopolar and Bipolar Tubal Coagulation - With these methods of tuballigation, electrical current is used to cause coagulation .

Parkland and Irving Procedures - These procedure involves tying two non-absorbable ligatures around the fallopian tube in its proximal to middle segment and then cutting out the tubal segment between the ligatures. With the Irving procedure, one end of the tube is buried in the uterine muscle.

Fimbriectomy - Tuballigation by fimbriectomy involves removing the part of the fallopian tube closest to the ovary.

Some believe that there may be long term hormonal side effects of tuballigation called Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome (PTLS).
